Edward Carter

An Anthology - What is "Travels" all about?

1 Balloons and Elephants small.jpg

My travel journal started out in 1986 as Letters from Abroad, but since some people weren’t sure whether Abroad was one word or two ;-), I changed the title of the advertising-free, twenty-two-page, subscription-only monthly to Edward Carter’s Travels©. It continued in hardcopy form until it was launched on the Internet, August 31, 1995. As such, it is one of the oldest, independent, travel reference sites, and has become virtually mandatory reading for travellers and travel and hospitality professionals around the world.

The excerpts in this anthology introduce you to some of my adventures around the world, many with links to the original stories (with vital details updated), and many of which have not been published here online before.

*Among lots of other things, Uncle Ted created and hosted The Point, his home near Saranac Lake in New York’s Adirondack Mountains—the only establishment in the world to be awarded “Hideaway of the Year” four times by Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report, and which has sat at or near the top of virtually every “Best Resort in the World” list ever since.

“As the creator of The Point, one of the most extraordinary small hotels in the world, first International Delegate of Relais et Châteaux for the United States, Bermuda, the Caribbean, and Mexico, and the creator and author of his famous travel journal, Dr. Carter is respected internationally as an arbiter of taste and style. His readers, like you, are sophisticated international travellers who appreciate his forthright assessments and advice because, independently paying his own way, he “tells it as it is.”
