Bangkok Diary

Scotty Wright at the Four Seasons

June 8, 2005

I popped into the Lobby Lounge of the Four Seasons Bangkok Hotel last night to listen to Scotty Wright sing and play.

Scotty has one of the most beautiful voices I’ve ever heard. He also is hip and sophisticated…maybe too sophisticated for this season’s crowd—mainly Chinese businessmen and their vacationing families for whom Count Basie is probably some foreign nobility—he was!)

I introduced myself and we reminisced of Bobby Short, one of my best buddies who “went up to the Carlyle in the sky” last month. Why Bobby? Because Scotty’s turn of a lyric, his sense of rhythm (and humor), and his downright urbanity is right there with Bobby.

The Bangkok Post recently wrote, “[Scotty’s performance] is a musical experience not unrelated to the entertainment music we're used to, but with a lot more depth, invention, emotional range, and excitement.
“…The deep notes are warm, the high notes clear, and in between they are firm and confident…
“His scat singing is original; it actually sounds as if he's singing very fast in another language…It certainly stirs up the excitement...
“There was a lot of tenderness in the songs Wright had chosen, as well as ironic humour, hip philosophy, and pure "let the good times roll" enjoyment.”

And the New York Daily News: "Scotty Wright is becoming one of only a handful of authentic jazz singers...He is a solid improviser...Whom does Wright sound like? Surprisingly, no one...the most gifted new jazz singer in decades."

And me? Well, just don’t miss Scotty Wright at the Four Seasons Bangkok Hotel's Lobby Lounge from 8pm every evening until October 31. You will have a wonderful time…especially if you know the difference between a hall porter and a Cole Porter. Call 02-251-6127 for more information.
