A Postcard from San Francisco

With all my travel to Asia, I often stop over in San Francisco. I usually stay at The Nob Hill Lambourne, a small, charming hotel with perhaps the friendliest staff in this friendly city. Of the several suites I’ve stayed in, my favorite is the Lola Montez Suite (#17) on the ground floor at the back of the house. It has a bright bedroom with a leafy tree right out the window, a deck off the living room, a good work area with a fax machine and a two-line phone w/data port, and a kitchenette stocked with essential goodies. The bathroom may not be paneled in travertine, but the towels are white and fluffy, and the shower works.

In the kitchenette in the charming living room off the lobby, there are muffins and other goodies in the morning, wine and cheese in the evening, and smiling faces everywhere all the time.

In a city that rarely admits how hard it is to get a taxi, it’s convenient that the Nob Hill is catty-cornered from the Ritz-Carlton that usually has a rank of waiting cabs. In any event, it’s a five minute stroll downhill to Union Square. (As it isn’t such an easy climb back up the hill, take advantage of the free exercise machine in your bedroom to limber up.)

Around the corner and down the hill one block is a nice restaurant called Oritalia. With branches in Portland and Vancouver, this is a charming, cozy, and popular spot.
