Edward Carter

An Introduction

Many an evening in the Café Carlyle with Bobby Short salooning, "In this world of underrated treasures and overrated pleasures, I'm glad there is you," my mind reels with the memories of years of tender travels.

I love to travel; so do you! Sometimes I have more fun bitching about the lousy experiences, than waxing lyrically about the lovely ones. You'll find all of that and more here.

A few years ago, friends said that my letters home would be fun and useful for everyone who loves to travel. Having sold The Point, my home/hotel in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, I traveled a lot-maybe 250,000 miles year-partly to answer my ex-guests' requests to recommend an inn in Japan, a restaurant in Singapore, or a bookstore in Madrid. Every month I filled pages with tales of discovery (and woe).

In time, my letters evolved into a twenty-four page, subscription-only, monthly journal. It became so popular that, for more than a year, British Airways seat-pocketed special anthology editions in their first class sections and lounges around the world.

Here's BA's introduction to the original Edward Carter's TRAVELS© to give you an inkling of what you'll find in these pages as time goes by.

"Much of today's travel has become tedious and trepidatious, forcing both the businessman and vacationer to abandon what used to be the fun of adventure and exploration. To help eliminate the tedium and tension, and make worldwide travel fun again, we are proud to introduce Dr. Edward Carter and his letters from abroad.

"As the creator of The Point, one of the most extraordinary small hotels in the world, former International Delegate of Relais et Châteaux, and author of his famous travel monthly, Dr. Carter is respected internationally as an arbiter of style and taste. His readers, like you, are sophisticated internationals travelers who appreciate is forthright assessments and advice because, independently paying his own way, he 'tells it as it is.'

"As your roving 'rich uncle,' Dr. Carter travels the world introducing you to extraordinary people, and fascinating things to do. He not only scrutinizes hotels, resorts, and restaurants, but also explores rare shops, private collections, and secret hideaways. He assesses the newcomers, re-evaluates the old stand-bys, and recommends both intrepid and indulgent itineraries.

"We know you will appreciate having this opportunity to get to know Dr. Carter. Enjoy it in style." - BRITISH AIRWAYS
