Edward Carter Forty Years in Forty Minutes (this is page 38 of 38)
![]() In the center of the living room's west wall is a very fine, early 19th-century, Thai wedding cabinet, in its original finish. It is flanked by 3 more fallacies, and two, locally-made, Chinese-style tables. Above the tables are centered two fine American Chippendale-style mirrors from the 18th century that my great garndfather bought. Above the table on the right are two oils from the 19th-century, French, Barbizon school, and on the left, a Rembrant etching dated 1646 and a Daubigny oil, painted on wood. Centered under each mirror are silhouettes of my maternal great, great grandparents. The wonderful object on the locally-made, modern coffee table is an intricately hand-woven, picnic platter cover--no flies on us! I just love the shape of the shiny blades of lacquered grass. Across the room is a 19th-century, laquered cabinet covered with hand-painted butterflies. I call it a farang cabinet because westerners (farangs) in these parts tend to butterfly from one romance to another at the least zephyr. ![]() On top of the cabinet are cinnabar, laquered, 19th-century betel nut boxes, and on the walls on either side are some of my photographs of Thailand and Scotland that were on display in the gallery in New York. The rest of the apartment is also filled with goodies, and when I get time to take some pictures, I'll include them here. Suffice it to say that Thailand is indeed a magic kingdom, and life is grand. I hope you come to visit me, we'll dine a la The Point! "As the creator of The Point, former International Delegate of Relais et Châteaux, and the author of his famous travel monthly, Dr. Carter is respected internationally as an arbiter of style and taste. *********************************************************************
